Convention contacts Convention Coordinator Registration Coordinator David Vergobbi | Skirvin Hilton Hotel William Balser Skirvin staked his claim to land on the Oklahoma frontier as an original "89er" before making his fortune as an oil and real estate tycoon. He built the Skirvin Hotel in 1910-11 and lived in a suite on the hotel's ninth floor with his three children, one of whom was socialite Perla Mesta (U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg; pictured below with First Lady Bess Truman, left, and President Harry Truman). Once billed as the "finest hotel in the Southwest," the Skirvin has had presidents, dignitaries, athletes, singers, and actors among its guests. The hotel closed in 1988 and sat vacant for 19 years, but the Hilton chain bought it in 2007. The Skirvin has maintained its historic architecture and charm while offering amenities for the modern hotel guest. Consistently honored as an outstanding hotel by organizations such as AAA, TripAdvisor, and US News & World Report, the Skirvin is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
