Welcome to Pittsburgh

It’s been nearly a quarter of a century since AJHA first visited Steeltown! A LOT has changed since 2000, and we cannot wait to welcome yinz back to the City of Champions for the 43rd annual convention of the American Journalism Historians Association, Oct. 3-5, 2024.

Yes, you can expect all the wonderful research papers and research-in-progress presentations––as well as engaging panel discussions––that cover a wide range of mass communication history topics.

But this year’s conference will also feature some special events, including a tour of the Heinz History Center, where you can learn about the pioneering spirit of Western Pennsylvania women who helped build the Keystone State. While at the History Center, you can also revisit your childhood by wandering around the original set pieces from Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, stop in the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum to hear a recording of the very first radio broadcast of a Major League Baseball game and relive the glory days of the gridiron’s Steel Curtain.

We also look forward to honoring two journalists this year–one from print and another from sports broadcast–who have contributed to the rich history of media in Pittsburgh.

This year we’ll stay at the historic Kimpton Hotel Monaco, located in the James H. Reed Building. Constructed in 1903, the Monaco is nestled in Pittsburgh’s downtown and is within walking distance of fine dining, museums, ballparks and more.

The following resources will assist you in planning your trip, if you have time for sight-seeing before or after the conference. Also see the welcome page from our local host committee with more information on the area.
